CHAPTER SEVEN

Annie dragged in to work the next morning as slowly as she dared, because she knew Daniel was just waiting to give her a hard time about riding in Samuel Stauffer’s buggy – and sure enough...

“Well, well,” Daniel drawled, as she walked in. “You’ll have to tell me all about it, Annie,” he teased. “What was it like, to ride around the countryside in the Love Machine?”

Annie untied her cape and fixed him with a kindling eye. “You don’t know the half of it!” she snorted. “Samuel Stauffer has tricked that thing out with tiger stripe upholstery and fuzzy dice!”

Daniel closed his eyes and shook with silent laughter. “Eh, Annie,” he choked, wiping his eyes. “You should be more grateful. He was doing you a big favor.”

Annie leaned against the counter and shook her head. “It’s only the mercy of God that no one else was on the road,” she sighed. “I would’ve died to be seen in that thing. And,” she added, looking up at him sharply, “I’m counting on you not to tell!”

“Oh, no one will hear about it from me,” Daniel promised her, “but there’s no telling what Samuel will do.”

“That’s for sure,” Annie grumbled.

A big group of English customers entered the store just then, and Annie was glad of the distraction because Daniel would be forced to look after them and stop teasing her about Samuel Stauffer.

Annie kicked the inside of the counter with her foot. She supposed it would only be polite to invite Samuel to her birthday party, since her other friends were coming, but the look on his face the day before didn’t give her much hope that he’d show up.

Not that she cared either way, of course.

That morning shaped up to be a brisk sales day, and Annie was kept too busy to worry about anything else besides work; but, a little after noon, David Ropp came in to switch out the fabric he’d bought earlier. He gave Annie a sunny smile as he walked in.

“Afternoon, Annie!”

“Hi David,” she replied. “Back so soon?”

David shook his head. “Yeah. My Mamm says that I got the wrong notions with that fabric. I couldn’t tell any difference, but nothing would please her but I come back here to get the green instead of the blue buttons.”

Annie took the button cards and rang up the return in the register. “You can go and look at the ones we have,” she told him. “I’ll wait for you.”

David ambled over to the notions aisle, and picked a handful of cards off the rack. He brought them back to Annie and spread them out on the counter. “There, Annie. Which one do you like best?”

Annie looked up at him in surprise. “Why, what difference does that make? Which kind did your Mamm say she wanted?”

“Green,” he replied.

“Well, but—” Annie sputtered, “there’s light green, and yellow green, and blue green, and forest green. But that bolt of fabric was dark, so—” she squinted and pulled a card of dark green buttons out.
